Could some one please explain the difference between Universal Repeater and an Access point?

Last week I bought a new Wireless range extender, and in the cover they write it can be used as both Universal repeater and the Access point. Actually what is the difference and its use.

A access point will make a wired network accessable to wireless devices by physically connecting the AP and the router using a ethernet cable. A repeater will receive a signal from the wireless router and rebroadcast it wirelessly with no physical connection between the router and repeater.
